Reckoning installed in the Australian War Memorial

We congratulate Kat Rae (‘99) on the permanent installation of her artwork Reckoning in the new Afghanistan galleries at the Australian War Memorial. A member of our Gallery of Achievement, Kat’s work contributes to important national conversations about memory, loss and the realities of war. After serving in the Australian Army for 20 years, including two deployments to Afghanistan, Kat retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2019 to pursue her passion for the arts. Drawing on her lived experience, her work explores how place, memory and experience layer and mesh, and who or what is forgotten after the war.

Created in response to the Brereton Report, Reckoning asks Australians to confront difficult truths about the Afghanistan conflict. Its permanent place within the Memorial ensures Kat’s perspective will continue to engage visitors for years to come.
