John graduated from Latrobe University with BSc (Hons) and PhD. He began his career as a demonstrator at Latrobe University (1971) and was appointed reader in genetics at the University of Melbourne in 1988. He held the position of Dean of the Faculty of Science at the University of Melbourne for six years, having previously been head of the Department of Genetics (1994-98). He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and past president of the Genetics Society of Australia. His research interests are in ecological and evolutionary genetics. He contributes to education and the communication of science through textbooks and articles, through the training of Graduate Students and by interaction with industry. He retired from active academic life in April 2008 as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (researcher). John is a former Deputy Chancellor at La Trobe University and is a member of our Board of Governors. He is a Life Governor of the School John was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2011.
