Professor Antony Burgess AC ‘64

Tony was for many years Director of the Melbourne branch of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research and a Professor of Cell Biology in the Department of Surgery at the University of Melbourne. He is also President of the Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. A distinguished researcher in the field of Cancer Biology, he was co-discoverer of a powerful cellular stimulant. In 1998, he was appointed Companion in the Order of Australia for Services to Scientific Research and Clinical Medicine, particularly through research into the early diagnosis and treatment of Cancer, for developing a structure linking diverse research units to facilitate the exchange of information and protocols for the effective treatment of Cancer.  This is the highest honour awarded to an Old Ivanhoe Grammarian.
