Mr Peter J Seymour OBE ’49 †

Peter graduated from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music where he trained as a teacher and taught music in Melbourne, Sydney and in England, where he also trained as a singer. He was co-founder of the Sydney Youth Orchestra and was it’s Musical Director at the time of his death in 1987. He was also Chairman of the National Music Camp, former Resident Conductor and Chorus Master of the Australian Opera, co-founder, musical director and conductor of the Sydney Philharmonic Orchestra, conductor of the Sydney University Musical Society, a member of the music board of the Australia Council and a cultural adviser to the NSW Minister for the Arts. He was awarded an OBE for his services to Australian Music in 1977 and was considered by many to have made the greatest contribution to young Australian music.
