Following an outstanding sporting career at Ivanhoe Grammar School, Alf went on to represent Australia in athletics at two Olympic games – in Amsterdam in 1928 and in Berlin in 1936. He won the 440-yard hurdles at the Melbourne Centenary Games in 1934 and won a bronze medal in the 110 yards relay at the Empire Games (now known as the Commonwealth Games) in Sydney in 1938.
