Emeritus Professor Graham Lawton ‘30 †

Graham graduated from the University of Melbourne with Bachelor Degrees in Arts and Education. He taught at Geelong College for two years, before proceeding to Oxford to take a Masters Degree in Geography. He and his wife took part in wartime evacuation of children from Britain to Canada and, whilst stranded in the USA from 1948-51, was Associate Professor in Geography at the University of Washington. In 1951, he took up the position of Reader in Charge of the newly created Geography Department at the University of Adelaide and became Foundation Professor in 1957. Under his guidance, the department expanded rapidly gaining an international reputation as a leading teaching and research department, particularly into Asian and Aboriginal issues. He is remembered for his encouragement, commitment and research and strongly held principles of fairness.
