Dr John Barker FRS ‘41 †

John graduated as BSc in physics and BA (Hons) in mathematics from Melbourne University in 1945 and later as DSc in chemistry. His work in research, teaching and administration in the field of theoretical physics, made him a world leader in his specialty. He spent almost 20 years at the CSIRO, where his last position was Chief Research Scientist. He held professional posts at the University of Waterloo in Canada. In 1969, he relocated to the US where he worked, until his retirement, with IBM in the Silicon Valley, California. He was elected a Fellow of The Australian Academy of Science in 1967 and of The Royal Society in 1981 and was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Science at La Trobe University in 1992.
