Old Ivanhoe Law Society (OILS)
OILS is a society dedicated to the welfare of its members. Membership of OILS is open to anyone entitled to be a Life Member of the OIGA who has a law degree or is studying law.
OILS was formed to meet the career needs of alumni law students. The Society’s interests now include IGS students who are contemplating a career in the law, under-graduates applying for seasonal clerkships and alumni lawyers during their early years of practice. OILS is based on the premise that, advice freely given by experienced, well-intentioned professionals who have no agenda is both rare, and invaluable.
OILS has recorded a large number of podcasts that can only be accessed by members. In them, Alumni share their experiences, observations and insights of the law. The recordings cover all ages and circumstances, from Partners of major law firms to law students applying to become seasonal clerks. The topics of conversation are equally diverse. The target markets for these recordings are IGS secondary students and alumni law students. These podcasts are an enduring gift from one generation of alumni to the next.

During its early years training was held at Ivanhoe Grammar School, as were meetings of Committee. Sydney Buckley was the first President and subsequently held the position of Vice President until 1941.
The close relationship between Club and the School has continued to this day.
The Club enjoyed wonderful success during the 1930’s, 1970’s and 1980’s having won many Victorian Team Premierships. Olympic Games representatives include Alf Watson, 1928 and 1936, Ian Campbell, 1980 and Gary Honey, 1980, 1984, and 1988.
During 2019/20 the Club joined with the Old Ivanhoe Grammarians’ Association sporting clubs in order to formalize our relationship with current and past students of Ivanhoe Grammar School.
The Club competes in summer and winter competitions for males and females conducted by Athletics Victoria. Age groups from 14 years and above are provided a pathway to senior athletics competition after finishing Little Athletics and/or School Athletics.
Summer competition comprises track and field events, while the winter competition comprises the ever popular cross-country season. Cross-country is conducted over a wide range of distances, concluding with the half-marathon at seasons end.
The Club provides coaching and training for Ivanhoe Grammar School students at Chelsworth Park. A very high percentage of our members are either students or past students of Ivanhoe Grammar School.
The Club is fortunate to have an experienced group of coaches catering to a wide range of events. Middle distance training is mainly held at Chelsworth Park.
