A wonderful night to celebrate our Class of 2020 – Plenty Campus!
Gathering at The Brunswick Mess Hall, a business owned by alumni Scott Assender ’90, a total of 71 students and staff reconnected on 14 May 2021.
Reminiscent of an airport arrivals hall, it was evident the cohort was excited to see each other and also their year 12 leadership team. Laughter could be heard throughout the venue and there was a genuine sense of family in the room.
Many of the Plenty Campus Class of 2020 are studying at universities across Melbourne.
Biomedicine at Melbourne, Commerce and Architecture at Monash and Sports/Commerce at Latrobe seem to be the most popular courses amongst the cohort.
It was also great to see Liam Nichol enjoying his electrical apprenticeship with alumni Tristian Grieve (’99) from Roar Connected.
President of the OIGA, Wayne Vanderwert mentioned it was ‘outstanding to have the Class of 2020 reconnect at this event given their final year was affected by the start of Covid.
OlGA Councillor and former year 10 boys’ basketball coach Alex Bacskos (’13) was in attendance and commented ‘it was great to reconnect with the basketball boys, they have developed into fine young men and it was a pleasure to hear what they are now studying. Hopefully, I may see a few of them down at the OIGA Football Club in the future’.
This year marks the 60th Anniversary of the Ivanhoe Grammar School Cadet Unit.
What a fantastic milestone to have achieved for the Cadet Unit which has grown from strength to strength and is a huge part of the School and its history.
It was wonderful to have the Honorary Colonel of the Unit, Lt Col (Retd) David Waugh and the first CUO Geoff Brown ’62 in attendance to help us celebrate the Ceremonial Parade (aka Passing Out Parade) this afternoon.
Geoff recalls he had 40 cadets under his command 60 years ago.
There is now over 500 cadets in the unit!
Alumni from the Class of 2017-2019 returned back to the Plenty Campus today to reconnect with the current year 12’s.
They offered some advise and insights to the cohort for the rest of the year which were invaluable.

The synergy between the OIGA and the Ivanhoe Grammar School community was put on show on the weekend when our Old Ivanhoe Kayak Club provided over thirty past students from 1992 to 2019 with river safety and coaching at the recent Family Camp.
This unique camp allows past and present students and parents to mix as well as showcase the sport of whitewater paddling to our new Year 7 students and families.
School families are both overwhelmed and grateful for the way that out Old Grammarians provide care to our School families with their paddling expertise, ensuring a safe and adventurous weekend to all. A camp such as this would be impossible without the assistance of the OIGKC for which the School family is thankful.
As a result of the disruptive year in 2020, it was wonderful to welcome back last year’s graduates, Ridgeway Campus, back to the School on 30 April 2021 to gather for their 1 year reunion.
Despite being ‘off campus’ for six months, the most popular comment was ‘it feels like we haven’t been here for ages’ and ‘it’s good to be back’.
Principal, Gerard Foley, addressed the 120 students in attendance and the Year 12 leadership staff reaffirming they are always welcome at
Ivanhoe Grammar School and will forever be an Ivanarian.
A majority of the cohort are attending university and enjoying their studies especially being on campus while others are enjoying having joined the workforce
or taking a gap year.
We wish them all the best and look forward to keeping in contact with them.
Congratulations to alumni Alex Mirkov ’17 who has signed with Carlton Football Club Reserves Squad for the 2021 VFL season.
Alex has been a sports coach at Ivanhoe Grammar School since 2018.
He represented the School in Volleyball in the AGSV sports competition and is currently coaching Volleyball (Summer Sports) and Girls Basketball (Winter Sports).
Alex has also played two seasons with Old Ivanhoe Football Club in the VAFA and was a valued team mate and player at the Club.
We wish him well for 2021 and beyond.
